Giant Clothes Pin Project

Objective: Demonstrates the basic procedure of resin casting.

Materials required: Giant Clothes Pin poly mold # PMB-13 ($2.50), 4 ounces casting resin, paper measuring cup, stir stick (box of 1000 #CS-1000 $5.95), BS-55 giant cloths pin spring ($79 ea.), Safety glasses or goggles (always when handling chemicals)

Optional: Pigment, Disposable gloves

Overview: This casting project may be used with Eurocast or Almond Eurocast for a quick setting -odor free project. Using EZ Cast clear casting resin adds an element of time (about 4 hours) to the cure and features the classic polyester resin aroma. The upside of EZ Cast however, is the ability to create clear or transparently colored projects that may feature inclusions such as glitter, coins, or bugs, to name just a few.

Procedure:

1) Level poly mold to ensure a complete fill to both cavities.

2) Prepare to mix and pour either of the Euro resins immediately after combining the two components. If you are adding pigment, add it to one side in the cup first, before adding the other side of the 2 part system. Euro resins set up FAST and you only have about 30 seconds to stir (furiously) with the stick before you must pour carefully into the mold.

3) Into the paper measuring cup pour a total of 4 ounces of resin (2 ounces A plus 2 ounces B – Eurocast or Almond Eurocast) or 4 ounces EZ Cast and 12 drops per ounce of MEKP hardener {48 drops total per 4 oz.}.

4) Mix well and pour into mold, filling both cavities evenly and completely. Each cavity is 2 ounces exactly, so if you overfill one you will be short on the second.

5) Resist the temptation to poke, jiggle, or move the castings in the mold until they are completely cured. (5-10 minutes for Euro resins, up to 4 hours for EZ Cast).

6) Demold, sand sharp edges, and mount the two halves in the BS-55 brass spring.
