Terminology Review
GM Acrylic: Cell cast acrylic sheet, high melt point (400°F.) so it resists heat better during cutting and machining operations. Up-side: Beautiful colors, easy to fabricate. Down-side: Handmade, cast one sheet at a time. Higher cost, inconsistent dimensions.
FF Acrylic: Fabricating grade extruded sheet. Medium melt point (around 275°F.) so cutting is slower, machining may require coolant as in metalwork. Upside: Lower cost, consistent thicknesses, can’t tell the difference from GM by looking at it.
MC Acrylic: Extruded via the “melt colander” process, MC is also a fabricating grade acrylic. It is extremely close to FF in melt point (260° F.?) So all the same fabricating tricks that work with FF to avoid overheating will serve you well with MC. Upside: Bargain price, nice colors. Downside: Slower to cut and polish.
Transparent: You can read a newspaper through it.
Translucent: Allows light to filter through, but not an image. Lightboxes, bathroom windows.
Opaque: Does not let any light through.
Fluorescent: Makes rough edges or frosted engraving
